Upon something for the Jamesians

Would it suprise you to learn that the Mets are statistically inferior to the Yankees in just about every relevant fielding category? Looks like the pinstripers are succeeding in spite of their "anchor" of a shortstop.

What did you think of that Reyes/Castillo DP the other night? If you haven't seen it, go to Mets.com and check it out. Can't imagine the Captain and Cano pulling that one off.

Go to ESPN and check their Zone Ratings. Last time I checked Jose was tied with Vizquel at number 1 in MLB, and he had fewer errors than Vizquel. Jeter was 26th or so, with twice as many errors as Reyes. Could be looking at a legitimate gold glove for a New York shortstop this year. But it will be hard to wrestle the award away from Vizquel.

Nice outing from the Moose last night. How many more starts can you give him in the heat of a pennant race? Might be time for Ian Kennedy.

that was a decent play. Ryan Zimmerman is not exactly Rickey henderson getting down the line though.

Reyes is a better defensive shortstop than Jeter this year, and maybe from now on. But what about the other Mets? Who is slacking, such that they would be rated in the middle on the pack in the MLB (and behind the Yankees).

Mike Mussina is a crybaby whose best days are behind him. He tightens up against the good teams nearly half the time, and starts whining about location rather than changing his pattern. I remember some huge starts he has had for the Yankees, but most are several years ago, and they are fading further in my memory.

I'd like to see these stats you're referring to. The Mets are a pretty solid team defensively. Very strong up the middle (where it counts the most). Reyes and Castillo are the best DP team in the league, and Beltran is as good in center as anyone. Loduca is pretty good catcher but subpar thrower, Delgado sucks, Wright is pretty good and getting better (excellent range and hands, erratic arm), Alou is average in left, and Green sucks in right. But Milledge is good and will get better.

That was fielding percentage only, and the Mets and Yanks were at a virtual tie at .985, with the Yanks making 2 fewer errors. Means next to nothing. Go look at the individual player zone ratings at ESPN. And if you want to find "Past a Diving" Derek Jeter, start from the bottom. And I never called him an "acnchor", but I have said that it looks like he's playing defense in Herman Munster's shoes.
